What’s the difference between polycarbonate and acrylic, and why does Dishy Shield use polycarbonate?
We use premium double-sided UV-coated polycarbonate because it offers the best real-world protection for your Starlink dish.
Here’s a simple comparison:
Impact resistance (hail, birds, debris): Polycarbonate is incredibly tough — about 30 times stronger than acrylic and 250 times stronger than glass. It flexes on impact and absorbs hard hits without cracking or shattering. Acrylic (sometimes called Perspex or Plexiglass) is more brittle and can crack, chip, or break from hail, bird pecks, or flying branches.
UV resistance & long-term clarity: Standard polycarbonate can yellow over time, but our high-quality double-sided UV coating completely prevents fading, yellowing, or brittleness for at least 10+ years outdoors (as already proven in our current FAQ). Acrylic has good natural UV resistance but lacks the extreme strength your dish needs.
